National Immunization Awareness Month (August)
Protecting Native Communities Through Immunization
August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a time to highlight the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages. For Native American communities—often disproportionately affected by preventable illnesses—this month carries urgent relevance.
Why Immunizations Matter for Native Americans
Historically, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations have suffered from higher rates of infectious diseases such as influenza, hepatitis A and B, and COVID-19. These communities may also face barriers to healthcare access, including transportation, insurance coverage, and culturally competent services.
Vaccination is one of the most effective tools to prevent disease, reduce health disparities, and protect vulnerable members of the community—especially elders and children, who are sacred in Native traditions.
Cultural Considerations and Barriers
Many Native families value holistic healing practices, which can sometimes create tension with Western medicine. Trust-building is key. Health education that respects traditional beliefs while explaining the safety and effectiveness of vaccines is essential.
In rural tribal areas, vaccine availability and storage can be logistical challenges. Urban Native populations—like those in New York City—may face unique barriers, including limited access to Indian Health Service (IHS) resources.
A Call to Action
Community leaders, health educators, and families must come together to ensure that immunization is seen not just as an individual act, but as a collective responsibility. Protecting our people honors our ancestors and safeguards our future generations.
New York Indian Council’s Role:
The New York Indian Council (NYIC) is instrumental in promoting culturally competent vaccine awareness and outreach among urban Native populations. Through health education, case management, and referrals, NYIC ensures Native individuals have access to accurate information and immunization services.
