Spiderwoman Theater will commemorate its 50th Anniversary with Spiderwoman Theater's Block Party Pow Wow: An Indigenous Celebration August 15. The family-friendly afternoon of art, culture, heritage, and neighborhood unity will be held from 1-5 PM at the border of Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill, on DeGraw Street between Court and Smith Streets.

Spiderwoman Theater is the oldest continually-running Native feminist theatre company in the Americas. Its founders, the Miguel sisters, chose this location to honor the vibrant Native community that called Boerum Hill, Red Hook, and Cobble Hill home in the 1930s through the '50s, including Mohawks from Kahnewake and the Western tribes.

The block party will consist of Indigenous dancers, drummers, and singers such as the NYC drum, SilverCloud Singers, and MC Louis Morse of the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers. There will also be neighborhood vendors, speakers, and screened excerpts of Spiderwoman's work, including Tipi Tales from the Stoop, a solo show by Murielle Borst-Tarrant. The event is curated by Josephine Tarrant.

In addition to celebrating the Spiderwoman's 50th anniversary, the Block Party Pow Wow will also be held in honor of Spiderwoman Theater co-founder Gloria Miguel's 100th birthday. The event is free to the public with no reservations required.
